The view through the screen on the inside is excellent, while keeping the hot summer air out, or in the winter, keeping the warm electric or open fire heating in.

Our outdoor heavy duty screening fabric is made from 70% PVC and 30% polyester, with an openness of 6% and flame resistance  to comply with the Building Code of Australia Class  2 to 9.  Simply clean with soap and water  to remove  dust and dirt. This screen will allow you to stay outside on the patio when the wind picks up and shield you from the cold winter winds while still enjoying the view.

Dark screen will cut the glare levels outside and enhancing the view. Choose lighter colours that have a two weave colour, to prevent extra glare if the sun hits the screen. Our most popular colour is Charcoal, however there are over 14 colours to choose from,  including Navy, Platinum, Taupe and a Medium Grey.

Dual Roman & Roller Blinds

Layering up the window for practicality and elegance using dual blinds.

Dual blinds or Day/ Night blinds are the terms used to label the use of two roller blinds on the one window with larger offset brackets. This combination  sets your room up for the best thermal control and most effective way to get privacy in any corner of the house or office. Whether it be a bedroom or lounge room, controlling thermal transfer of heat and cold air makes for a cosier home all year round.

Similarly, the use of a translucent or light filtering roller blind, over laid with a soft fold roman blind, gives you the same thermal and light control, but with the use of upholstery fabric and greater choice of pattern and design on the window. Perhaps a more elegant and designed interior finish, linens, silks and cotton fabrics to choose from. Even wool can be transformed into a soft fold roman blind.

The use of a white, translucent roller blind, allows light to enter the room but provides adequate privacy during the day. The light filtering fabric, tends to give the room a soft glow when the sun hits it, maximising the light entering a small window.

The block out option over the top of the white roller blind completes the look, both functionally and aesthetically. The roman blind will cut out heat and cold transfer through the glass and give maximum  privacy at night when the light is on inside.

This combination has an endless array of choice, roman blinds with roller blinds behind  are a functional choice for any room in the house. To achieve any of the looks above, let Blindswholesale.com.au help you with your choice of fabric.

Inspired by a Grey Colour Palette

Grey Interior Colour Schemes To Inspire A Makeover

The use of grey walls has been  a driving force in house design for the last few years. It works equally  on the exterior as the interior. Painting your house in the grey tones, is a bit like having the latest ‘IT’ car! it cool, calm and collected and screams ‘designer’ like nothing else I can think of in the last few years.

However, there are many many greys and getting the balance just right, mixing them together and adding other references is what is the defining note to make the room work.  White is a key balance colour and gives the room a fresh modern touch. Natural timbers,  basket weave and  wooden floors also add a lovely balance to the room, it makes it less formal and  more family oriented. Grey can convey industrial influences and  displays a kind of utilitarian function to the room.  Grey doesn’t compete with the other elements and allows them to shine. It is the neutral base that  allow you to display furniture art and  fabric, it  harmoniously resonates with other elements in the room and does not drain them. It’s this lack of ‘personality’ which makes grey such a favourite as a background colour.

To finish the windows in the these rooms above, light needs to be absorbed and reflected to help the room glow. As Grey can be a flat colour, particularly the very dark greys, one needs to encourage the natural light. A white light filtering roller blind or roman blind will reflect light into the room. If you want a dark block out blind, overlay the white with a dark  fabric  to get the day/night  or dual  functionality  over the glass. Roller blind fabric are now available in many shades of grey. I would suggest selecting the fabric colour before the paint colour, as fabrics are far harder to find and match than paint.

To achieve any of these interior ideas and matching your window covering, Blindswholesale.com.au can help you with fabric selection, technical measuring and installation of the blinds. We also specialise in bespoke soft fold linen roman blinds and curtain making for Sydney Clients.

Greg Natale Designer Profile

Greg Natale

This Sydney based designer has been carving out a successful career in Australia for the last 10 years. His profile has been boosted tremendously from repeated exposure from Belle magazine spreads on the works he has completed.  I can’t think of any other Australian designer so feted in this magazine or any other. His style is very recognisable and has a very luxe edge, monochromatic colour schemes and pared back fit out.. It reminds me very much of Jonathon Adler’s style but with a limited colour overlay. Black and white, grey and white, strong bold dark colour schemes that scream ‘masculine glamour’!  its a fabulous dialogue that is repeated and customised from client to client. This is his signature and a very successful one! The interiors are very ‘grown up’ formal and  sophisticated, quite a bit ‘hotel like’.   Having said that, its a style that you can borrow little bits for your own home on a smaller scale, perhaps in a bedroom or study?

Mr Natale describes his style as “decoration layered over minimalism…”

Perhaps the minimalism is in the colours scheme….? because the layering is very luxurious, wallpapered ceilings, mirrors, lacquered cabinets, rich patterned walls and floor coverings, beautiful cushions, curtains and ornaments. Just simply beautifully proportioned spaces, with no clutter!

nave and white living georgia pond comau

In this living room by Mr Natale we see the fresh black and white monochromatic scheme, with a  flash of gold stools at the side of the  geometric rug. This styling really did find its roots in the late 1960’s and 70’s through the late designer David Hicks. A love of the two tone geometric pattern on the wall and floors was a constant in his interiors. It’s fresh clean and very ‘hotel like’ but  a look that you could imitate at home in the detailing.

white romans black and white rug

Another fabulous combination of pattern and plains, perhaps a bit more happening here in the colour arrangement. You can see the repletion of the geometric rug which anchors the room with its strong pattern, the background is balanced with white walls and white roman blinds. The use of the pale baby blue and green chairs is a nice addition to a fairly suburban room. ‘Glamming up’ any residence can be done quite simply as long as the theme you choose is balanced and continuous. That is to say that the theme runs from one room to another, do not try to mix too many  styles or over furnish the spaces.

black white small living design files

Another example of the monochromatic colour scheme and strong rug. Here the black and white theme has not been tampered with, the finishing touch in this petite space is the black glass chandelier, very decadent! But at the end of the day this space is practical and fun, a lovely place to unwind, that’s what interiors should strive for.

This is simply sublime…..

This is all very dreamy and interiors should be a bit like that, ever if only on a very small scale…. so that when you come home, all that hard work seems worthwhile.

Enjoy!

Jonathon Adler Designer Profile

Jonathon Adler

“its the small bits of playful punctuation that bring a room from a yawn to WOW…”

In 1994, Jonathon Adler launched a range of pottery at Barneys in New York, since then he has gone on to open 28 stores in the US, with more on the way. He has channelled his style in to the production of home décor ‘to die for’  fun colourful and elegant. Rugs cushions, lighting, furniture and is now involved in the fashion realm too. He is the designer who uses a mix of bold and subtle with a fresh clean white palate to bring a room together. It’s timeless, chic and elegant, I think a little bit like the interiors of David Hicks in the 1960’s. He says “every room needs an anchor and a star..” a soft rug and a bright  pattern on the curtains and cushions. Clean fresh colour busts from every corner, mid- century modern with pop culture references. Orange, lime green and gold are popular colours that transform the homes and hotels that Jonathon puts his stamp on for clients all around the world. It’s all about the confidence to mix it up, but every room should reference your life, with personal objects that you love… displayed in groups and clashing colours. More and more is good. he say’s we live in a ‘creative free- for- all’, its up to you to bring all the elements together, even if you like a neutral calm colour palette, we can all add the’ wow’ with a finishing touch, be it a statement light piece or a bold occasional chair in lime green side table.

indigo blue and yello white sheer curtain

This is a hotel in Palm Beach, fresh bright and fun. Statement curtains and decorative pelmet in indigo blue-the blue of the moment, with a sheer white curtains. White rollers would equally look fabulous here. Interesting, Jonathon often has a turquoise chair or cushion in his rooms, must be a favourite colour of his. Yellow throw rug to offset the blue on blue colour scheme. A very happy hotel room to greet clients on holiday.

The mid-century modern is referenced by the design of the turquoise occasional chair and the cut out fabric pelmet over the doors. The bold colours are offset with the pure white linen and walls, very fresh and uplifting, the white makes the blues so clear.

colorful-interiors-white pelment and curtain red couch

Ok, don’t be shy! This is how it’s done….!

With all the colour and pattern clash, the every essence of Jonathon’s design ascetic, the room is tempered with clean white walls and curtains. As I have mentioned in the previous posts, designers do tend to repeat the same details from job to job. Here, the same style of cut out fabric pelmet and curtains on the window. Detailed, but clean, fresh, fun and not fussy. This is ‘creative free- for all’ with just a little bit of a finishing touch with the light fitting in the centre and that  turquoise cushion on the orange couch.

Jonathan-Adler-blue white room

This is a beautiful room. Very soft and calming, referencing the more restrained detailing that so many people like, but in blues not taupe. However, the use of pattern and  repetition is there in the rug and curtain design in a more restrained colour and a stunning low statement light. Fresh and modern, but the furniture does hark back to the 60’s and 70’s styles mid-century modern.

Voge living sydney home curtains

This apartment was recently in an Australian interiors magazine. Somehow it all works together, possibly, balanced by the deep straw coloured walls. Pattern on the bed, floors and curtains requires a confident designer, interesting clashing designs have to be carefully chosen to balance the whole room.

blue walls green chair trans roman

Blue is a firm favourite of this designer, often, blue on blue, which most of us would not consider. The window has a sheer white roman blind, the lime green chair happily offsets the blue wall and pattern on the couch. The finishing touch is the gold coffee table.

Jonathon, is however not designing private residential commissions any more for interiors, the occasional hotel he will do. He says the shops keep him so busy. So, unfortunately there will not be a lot of new interiors for us to follow.

and my finishing touch for this blog on Jonathon is his little bit of advice for us all when entertaining …

“keep the dimmers on low, everyone will look younger, thinner and more glamorous….”

That’s a tip we can all follow at home. Remember ‘more and more is good’……Enjoy!

Designing With Personality

What Style Are You?

Can you define your style? Does your home reflect your personality and lifestyle choices. Showcase your treasures from your travels and hobbies. Display your family heritage and hand-me-down heirlooms, big and small?

Or does your home reflect the trends in the market and ‘designer of the moment’ influences?

Whichever style you have chosen, whether it maybe minimalist, contemporary, modern, vintage eclectic, eclectic elegance, warehouse conversion or modern industrial. Beachside coastal or inner city monochrome with lots of black.  Your home should be about displaying YOU. Have the confidence to go all out and make it what you want, do not worry about what anyone else has chosen or the latest trends.

Follow the high /low balance. Mix the expensive, ‘have to have’ items with more practical chain store finds to help you to complete the look. Try not to adhere too rigidly to one theme as this can lead to a flat and uninteresting room. That’s where the ‘personalise’ comes into the room.

A room needs balance to feel and look right, be inviting but always functional. Special items don’t want to be overwhelmed by too much other furniture in the room. Don’t over stuff the room, let space breath and let the room tell your story.

Apartment contemp

Fresh modern apartment living. All white interior, the only colour coming from the timber floor. A very popular apartment trend is the  sliding louver panels on the outside of the windows. This feature is one of the very best to be used in high rise buildings(at last!). In order to keep the heat from touching the glass on the outside of the building. It gives a consistent look to the building while protecting the owners from the heat of the day.

All the new apartments seem to have this similar modern minimalist look to them, quite open plan and simple layouts to accommodate modern living and furniture design and size. This room shows very little personality, very uncluttered and simple. I would add a white or soft taupe light filtering motorised roller blind to the windows. this would make the room feel a lot more cosy in the winter months.

mod ind home w bike

Modern Industrial interiors are one of the best ways to display a home full of individual quirky ideas. True luxury… is the availability of space and this style of home can accommodate all these features. High ceilings and bold exposed fit out, plumbing and electrical are often exposed on walls, light fittings and art installations are oversized.  It practical modern living yet humble and expressive in its originality.

Building materials and finishes are  concrete, brick and stone, industrial finish metal staircases and  mezzanine floor levels. Colours are natural finished with grey and black  highlights.

Motorised roller blinds would suit this type of home, simple practical  window coverings, in dark colours.

blue mono modern

Trending right now is the strong use of bold colours in interiors. Bold colours that are layered and repeated in the walls floors and furniture. Cushions and ornaments layer up, punctuated by a  less bold contrast, in this case the light grey bed upholstery. This is a classy, sophisticated look and in the case of the Prussian blue, I think quite masculine. I could see a block out roller blind  in dark blue on the window.

country modern

This is for the country cottage lovers. Simple and clean but showing a lot of personality with the collection of mirrors on the walls, throw rugs and the odd hand- me- down chairs. Its still modern in ‘chabby chic’ kind of theme, which has been around a few years now. This is a very relaxing room, no pretention, its low key and humble very DIY. On the window a white light filtering roller blind, perhaps topped with a sheer white curtain. Very soft, melting into the background, but cosy finish.

yello modern mono

The strong Yellow walls are the very height of the trend colour of the moment. When was the last time you can remember so much yellow available to buy in all the interior home shops? The tone may very a bit, but it is everywhere and so bright and cheerful. I like it! This room, however has followed a more sophisticated theme, matching with black and white. A bold strong personality would choose this colour combination. It’s  modern and contemporary, perhaps an apartment. You can just see in the front of the photo, black gloss kitchen cabinets and fridge door. Very ‘chic’ and cool. Personality has been added with the repeating photos on the wall, and a ‘rifle’ light stand. On the window a black roller blind would compliment this room.

This has been a quick look at some the of the latest interior looks with a view to personalising the space and what would complement the room on the windows.

Window coverings finish the interior design of a room while adding comfort by controlling the temperature transfer through the windows throughout the year.

What style do you like?

Kelly Hoppen

Image

Kelly Hoppen

Kelly Hoppen has been designing interiors around the word for a very long time. She has a fun ‘nick name’, as the ‘Queen of taupe’! This is why her interiors are so popular, gentle, soothing and classic. Lots of black, white, taupe and cream and windows dominated by Roman blinds and sheer curtains in similar shades.

Kelly’s style has been so copied and repeated around the design and renovating world,  truly positive sign of success and no greater form of flattery, can one achieve.

Like most successful designers they tend to repeat the formula with each new commission. Kelly likes to use a lot of repetition in her rooms, lots of  layering of the same element, be it lights, cushions, vases and plants . Also, over sizing of these elements at the same time. This give the room a cosy and luxurious feel ( because they are very expensive rooms…!) Most of us would not put so much in one room, however, this is her ‘signature look’ that has made her an international designer

Occasionally, you will find a splash of bright colour, but it is rare and in control.

Black and white/cream is a very popular repeated style. I find she tends to style the whole house to the same gentle flowing scheme, unlike other designers who mix it up in each room. It’s a consistent and beautiful result. Also, for us in the real world one that we can apply to our humble abodes!

High contrast, bold monochrome. White walls and black shutters. Very clean and  glamorous and very easy to achieve in your home. This look could very easily be achieved with dark venetian blinds, a cost effective alternative. All the dark browns are very ‘on trend’ now in interiors, in floors shutters and blinds to achieve the same look.

Layering is a designer favourite. Here curtains with woven wood screen blinds behind. I will be adding these to the website very soon. The effect is lovely, with filtered light coming in but good privacy for a bedroom. This look can be achieved with a screen roller blind or a light filtering fabric roller blind.

All these options are very popular and will allow you to layer your windows.sheer roman blind

Oh… and then there is the boat!

How lovely is that? Here Kelly has used dark timber venetian blinds. A cost effective and practical option for a room on solid ground too! I think they look quite ‘cool’. Venetians have been around for so long, but they can now give your room a very glamorous finish if you select well. They can give a similar ‘look’ to shutters, but without the expense. In this room they are quite a feature and finish the room nicely. Blindswholesale have a 63mm Visionwood range, with a huge colour choice to choose from to get a similar effect.

Interior Designer  Profile

Kelly is a huge presence in the US interior design scene. She broke into the  business through her hotel developer husband quite recently.  It is not always easy to identify what the designers are doing with window coverings, but here are some pictures of her recent work , that show the importance of  how we can create privacy on your window. It is also evident that she repeats the same look in different houses, despite a differing colour palette and detailing.

When you look at these pictures, try to see what appeals to you, rather that think ‘ that’s not my style’. Not many of us could cope with all these layers in one room.  However, it is very interesting to see how she  combines and uses many different colour combinations  and textures to get a unique interior with the WOW factor. These are very expensive and luxurious rooms, but we can all pick small elements and transfer that dialogue to our own home.

Its fun, wild and extravagant and Kelly says herself

“ my goal is to always to create a sense of adventure”

I have also noticed that ‘Horse ‘paintings are also popular. The dark painting balances the room, opposite the windows. White roman blinds with the very 70’s contrast trim is very elegant and finishes the room nicely. On the right another ‘Horse’ picture that adds a lot of character to the room, in this case a very safe taupe colour scheme!

Who would have thought to put apricot and soft yellow with charcoal art work. This is what I love about Kelly’s work, the pure clash and pushing the boundaries. This opens up your thinking to possibilities which we would have never considered.  It’s personality it’s, it’s putting your style out there and not being afraid to be different. It’s the WOW factor!
